About Mileva

Mileva is the face of this fund because those challenges make her an important symbol of the unrealized potential of entire communities in STEM – groups that are underrepresented yet essential to the backbone of society.

Mileva Marić (1875-1948) was a Serbian physicist and mathematician whose life highlights the importance of supporting underrepresented groups in science. Her struggles resonate with challenges still faced by marginalized communities in STEM, symbolizing the need for equity and inclusion
Born in Titel, Austria-Hungary (now Serbia), Mileva showed exceptional academic talent and overcame societal barriers to study physics and mathematics, fields dominated by men. In 1896, she enrolled at Zürich Polytechnic, where she met Albert Einstein. They became partners, both in life and scientific endeavors, marrying in 1903.
There is ongoing debate about Mileva’s role in Einstein’s groundbreaking theories, especially the Annus Mirabilis papers of 1905. While her precise contributions are unclear, what is clear is that Mileva faced significant obstacles in her own career, despite her potential.
Mileva is a powerful symbol of untapped talent in STEM, either because of access to the scientific community or the lack of supportive networks. She was one of the first women to pursue physics at the highest levels, despite systemic discrimination that prioritized her roles as wife and mother. Her experience exemplifies how many underrepresented scientists, particularly women, have had their contributions ignored or erased.
Mileva’s story also illustrates the power of intersecting underrepresented groups (women and ethnic minorities). Her unfulfilled potential serves as a reminder of the talent lost when systemic barriers prevent full participation in science.
